The series Travelling Light combines photographic prints and ceramic elements into small assemblages that float in their frames without visible support or foundation. Each photograph captures a moment where light plays a double role as medium and subject of the image - an abstract shape created by a headlight on the tarmac, coloured light patterns on a tow path, light pouring out of an open door, distorted reflections on a concrete floor… For an instant, light becomes embodied in these shapes, as the medium coincides with what is represented. The materiality of ceramics, by contrast, exists in an entirely different time frame. While light travels fast and changes continuously, clay, once formed and fired, is all but inert. Staging these extremely different temporalities and their complex relationships in the work, Travelling Light encourages a haptic approach to material and vision, a seeing that lingers on detail and texture of the momentary and the long-lived.
