To vary that which is in fact unchanging, 2021, 7 part partially glazed stoneware, press­moulded and hand-built, 120cm x 120cm x 5cm

This is a study for a wall sculpture in the form of a large circular structure made up of 11 elements referencing the 11 foundational chords of Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich. Each element consists of an identically sized and evenly spaced elevated segment of the circle, rising from the midst of an organic shape and creating contrasts in the work analogous to those between the regular rhythmic pulse and the natural rhythm based on the breath of the singers and wind instrument players of Reich’s piece. Variations in colour and colour intensity draw attention to the modulations of surface textures and create movement across the segments.
